Food & Wine

The Area

Château du Rayet sits at the heart of one of France's finest food and drink region in South West France. The local cuisine is rooted in the Périgord tradition: think duck confit, foie gras, rich slow-roasted meats, truffles, and walnut-based dishes. And of course the wine. Bergerac may be less well known than its famous neighbour Bordeaux, but for those in the know it's a genuinely exciting wine region in its own right — producing a diverse and often exceptional range of wines. With 13 AOC designations covering everything from crisp dry whites and rosés to rich reds and the world-famous sweet golden Monbazillac, there is a huge amount to discover. The region shares many of the same grape varieties as Bordeaux, but the wines have their own distinct character shaped by the local terroir — and almost all of the vineyards are welcoming, accessible and delighted to open their doors to visitors. It's one of the real pleasures of staying here.

And if you want to venture further afield, the vineyards of Bordeaux — including Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and the Médoc — are very accessible from the Château, making it a perfect base for exploring some of the world's most celebrated wine country.

Villeréal

Villeréal is a 5 minute drive (40 min walk, 12 min bike ride) from Château du Rayet and it is a wonderful, vibrant market town. It is small but it is full of life and character and its shops and restaurants are busy all year round. The weekly markets on Saturday and Wednesday mornings under the 14th century covered market hall are well worth a visit and great to source local and seasonal produce.

Fromages et Plus is located on the market square and is a cheese shop, wine cellar, fine grocery and bar offering exceptional cheeses, fine charcuterie, and wines and spirits from the local area and beyond. Its a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by with a glass of local wine in hand. They also offer Rémy, Pascal and the team can help you select wine pairings for a dinner at the château, and put together bespoke platters to order. They also offer tastings on the terrace facing Villeréal's covered market — a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

The château has a fantastic BBQ for outdoor dining in warmer months — stock up at the market or Fromages et Plus and make an evening of it on the terrace.

### The Vineyards

The surrounding countryside is covered in vineyards, and the vast majority are happy to welcome visitors for tastings — just turn up or call ahead. The region produces a wide range of wines across 13 AOC designations, from crisp dry whites and rosés to rich reds and the world-famous sweet golden Monbazillac.

The closest vineyard to the château is [Le Clos du Breil](https://www.leclosdubreil.fr/), a family estate near Issigeac — practically on your doorstep and a great starting point.

Other nearby producers well worth visiting:

[Château de Monbazillac](https://chateau-monbazillac.com/en/) — one of the most iconic estates in the whole region, and a must-visit. Overlooking the Dordogne valley just 10 minutes from Bergerac, the 16th-century château combines its presentation of the past with modern technologies — with videos, light shows, puzzles and animations — making the tour dynamic and fun for all ages. The visit ends with a free tasting of the estate's famous golden sweet wine. Well worth combining with lunch at the château's restaurant.

[Château de la Fayolle](https://www.chateaufayolle.com/), Saussignac — a beautiful medieval castle with its own organic vineyard. Guests are encouraged to stroll the grounds, see the 16th-century chapel, the 18th-century dovecote and the lake, and the team offers guided vineyard tours, tastings and sharing platters for lunch. A wonderful way to spend half a day.

[Château Feely](https://chateaufeely.com/), Saussignac — an award-winning certified organic and biodynamic vineyard with its own wine school. Activities range from guided vineyard tours and wine and food pairing lunches to full-day winemaker experiences and multi-day walking tours, available throughout the year.

[Maison Wessman](https://maisonwessman-wines.com/) (Vignoble des Verdots), Conne-de-Labarde — one of the most exciting estates in the region. The estate offers guided tours, wine tastings, a wine bar and the Bistrot Maison Wessman by Michelin-starred chef Thierry Marx, in the heart of the Périgord Pourpre. A half-day here — vineyard walk, cellar tour, tasting and lunch — is superb. They also offer walks and picnics among the vines.

If you'd like someone to do the organising (and the driving), [Dordogne Vineyard Tours](https://www.dordognevineyardtours.com/) run bespoke private tours of the Bergerac wine country, taking small groups to several vineyards in a day with a locally sourced picnic lunch among the vines included. They are a locally run company who can tailor the day entirely to your tastes, whether you're drawn to organic producers, specific appellations or hidden gems. They can also come directly to the château for a private tasting at home — ideal if you'd rather not venture out.

### Restaurants

There's plenty of choice in the area, whether you're after a Michelin-starred occasion or a relaxed family dinner.

Michelin-starred restaurants in the area:

- [La Tour des Vents](https://tourdesvents.com/), Monbazillac — the closest Michelin-starred restaurant to the château. Set at the top of the Bergerac vineyards next to an old windmill, chef Damien Fagette crafts seasonal menus around the finest Périgord produce — Blonde d'Aquitaine beef, foie gras and free-range Périgord chicken — with unforgettable panoramic views over the valley. Book well in advance.

- [Les Fresques, Château des Vigiers](https://vigiers.com/michelin-star-restaurant-dordogne.php), Monestier — set within a splendid 16th-century château, chef Didier Casaguana creates daily changing surprise menus directly inspired by the flavours and produce of the region. The estate also has a golf course, spa and a more casual bistro option. Smart dress required for dinner; book ahead.

- [Le Vieux Logis](https://www.vieux-logis.com/?lang=en), Trémolat — a Relais & Châteaux property about 40 minutes from the château. Chef Vincent Arnould, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, has spent 20 years revisiting Périgord's regional products with creativity and refinement — duck, walnut oil, porcini mushrooms, truffles, foie gras — choosing only the finest seasonal ingredients from local producers. Set in a beautifully restored 17th-century manor house in the picturesque village of Trémolat, it combines the tranquillity of the countryside with excellent French cooking. In summer, lunch is served on the terrace under lime trees overlooking the French garden.

For something more relaxed or family-friendly:

Not everyone wants foie gras every night, and the good news is there's no shortage of options. Enzo in Bergerac is popular for pizza, and both Le Moderne and Nord Sud offer good family-friendly menus with plenty of choice for all ages. [*Add links when available*]

At the château:

We can also arrange a private chef to come to the house — a great option for a special dinner without leaving the property. [*Add details/link here*] For a private dining occasion, [Fromages et Plus](https://www.facebook.com/p/Fromages-et-Plus-Villereal-100063576282832/) in Villeréal can help you select wines to match each course.

### Getting Around — Taxis & Private Drivers

If you'd prefer not to drive — whether you're heading out for a vineyard lunch, a Michelin-starred dinner, or an airport transfer — [Eymet Private Driver](https://www.eymetprivatedriver.com/) is the go-to local option. A fully licensed English-speaking chauffeur VTC based in the area, they cover airport transfers, restaurant and vineyard trips, and A-to-B journeys for groups of up to 8 passengers — including child seats if needed. They're particularly useful for wine tours where you'd rather leave the driving to someone else. Fares from the local area to Bergerac airport start from €60 each way for up to 4 passengers, and they ask for 24 hours' notice for restaurant and vineyard trips. Book via [eymetprivatedriver.com](https://www.eymetprivatedriver.com/).

Let me know if there's anything else to tweak — I've left placeholders for the restaurant links and private chef details whenever you have those to hand. I'd also suggest double-checking the Fromages et Plus link, as there was a registered address change in late 2024 — worth confirming they're still trading from Villeréal's market square.or the celebratory event itself, outside dining in the Courtyard is a wonderful option (comfortably seating 14).  Alternatively the dining room offers a sense of grandeur and occasion (comfortably seating 14). Weather permitting the choice is yours.  We can help you source local foods, wines and cake.  We also have private chefs who can host your event.  You can choose fine dining and/or informal barbecues and/or family brunches and/or picnics by the pool.
